For thirteen years the Origin System has been the whole world. Every relay, every open landscape, every Void fissure you have ever run has sat inside the same star system. That changes this winter.
Announced at TennoCon 2026, Tau is the final update of the year, and it does the one thing Warframe has never done: it takes the Tenno somewhere else.
A new solar system
Tau has been a name on the horizon since the Sentients were first mentioned — the system the Orokin sent their terraforming fleet to, and the system that sent something back. Going there is not a new open world bolted onto the old map. It is a new solar system, with its own enemies and its own rules.
If you have been putting off finishing the star chart, this is the nudge. Tau is the payoff for a story thread that has been running since the beginning.
Brysko, and the "chimera frame"
The update introduces Brysko — a detective-themed Warframe who is voiced, with an internal monologue that plays as you use them. Digital Extremes are calling this a new category: a chimera frame.
That is a genuine departure. Warframes have had personality through their kit and their lore, never through a voice in your ear while you play. Whether it lands is going to come down to writing, and Warframe's writing has been on a very good run since The New War.
A Warframe that talks back is either the best idea in years or the most divisive one. There is not much middle ground available.
Portau — a card game, in Warframe
Tau also brings Portau, Warframe's first card mini-game.
Every long-running live game eventually grows a card game inside it, and the good ones become a reason to log in on the days you do not feel like grinding. There is not much detail yet beyond its existence and its name.
What this means for the grind
Nothing you own stops mattering. But a new system means new resources, new factions and a new progression floor, and the last time Warframe opened a genuinely new region the smart move was to arrive with forma, endo and Steel Path access already banked rather than farming them under pressure.
Tau lands Winter 2026. We will keep the countdown on the World State board as dates firm up.
