EPHEMERIS: Why Our Timers Keep Running When the API Does Not

On the morning of 31 August, api.warframestat.us — the community API that a great many Warframe sites and apps are built on, including this one — stopped updating. For about nine hours it served data that was hours old, and then it began answering requests with a flat "WorldState Not Found".

Across the internet, Plains timers froze at 00:00:00 and fissure counts read zero. Ours did too, for a while. They do not any more.

The mistake we had made

We were asking a server in another country what time of day it was on the Plains of Eidolon.

Put like that it sounds absurd, because it is. The open-world cycles are not news. They are clockwork:

• Plains of Eidolon — 150 minutes: 100 of day, 50 of night
• Orb Vallis — 1600 seconds: 400 warm, 1200 cold
• Cambion Drift — Fass and Vome, riding the Plains boundary
• Duviri — five moods, two hours each
• Zariman — the faction flips every cycle

None of that needs a server. It needs arithmetic.

EPHEMERIS

So we wrote our own engine. EPHEMERIS — the name is the old astronomers' word for a table of computed positions, the thing navigators carried before anyone could ask a satellite.

It calculates all five cycles from the clock in your browser. No request, no dependency, no service to go down. When the community API disappeared for nine hours, the cycle cards on this site never stopped counting.

ALMANAC does the same job for Baro Ki'Teer. He arrives every fourteen days, always a Friday, always at 13:00 UTC, and stays for exactly forty-eight hours. That is a grid, so we compute it — verified across four years of projected arrivals, every one landing on a Friday to the millisecond.

What we still cannot compute, and will not pretend to

This is the important half.

Fissures, sorties, Nightwave challenges and Archon hunts are genuinely random. Digital Extremes generate them. Nobody can calculate them — not us, not anyone — and any site claiming otherwise is guessing.

And ALMANAC can tell you exactly when Baro arrives, but never what he is bringing. His manifest does not exist anywhere until he lands. We would rather show you an honest countdown and an empty inventory than invent a list.

So every card now says which it is

You will see two small marks on the World State board:

• ☉ COMPUTED — worked out by EPHEMERIS. Always available.
• ◇ LIVE FEED — genuinely live data. As available as somebody else's server.

That is not decoration. It is so you know, before anything goes wrong, which half of the page you are looking at — rather than finding out afterwards, when a timer is sitting at zero and you cannot tell whether the game changed or the website broke.
